Statistics have an important role to play both in site planning and in the analysis and interpretation of data. The theoretical and practical potential of statistics in archaeology, and the types of statistical techniques that are most of use for archaeologists, is explored in this study which, although extremely specialised and clearly targeted at archaeological researchers, draws on case studies throughout.
