Paul Elliott

Paperback, 208p b/w illus and pls (Spellmount 2007, Pb 2011)

Drawing on his experiences as a re-enactor, Paul Elliott here reconstructs the career of a fictional soldier, Gaius, to show what life may have been like for the ordinary members of Britains late Roman army. Based primarily on archaeological evidence from Hadrians Wall, sections discuss military equipment and everyday artefacts, training, recruitment, pay and provisioning and religion, stitched together with a speculative narrative which takes Gaius from frontier duties and campaigning in Britain, to transfer and fighting over the Channel.
