Published in 1570 in Antwerp, the Theatrum orbis terrarum was an extraordinarily ambitious undertaking, showing the whole of the world in a series of maps. The project was directed by Abraham Ortelius, but it was a collaborative affair with scholars from all over Europe contributing maps. The atlas was also visually stunning as is brought out here in a wealth of colour illustrations. The book looks at the life of Ortelius and the production of the atlas, as well as the history of the low countries in the 16th century.
