hardback. 71p, many col pls (Encyclopaedia of Underwater Archaeology Vol 1, Periplus 2003).

This first volume in a new series devoted to underwater archaeology looks at the origins, issues, approaches and problems in diving to reclaim lost artefacts and treasures. The authors examine early evidence for diving, and in many cases looting, wrecks through to the invention of the aqualung in 1943 leading to the establishment of underwater archaeology as a discipline from the 1950s onwards. Modern techniques, methodologies and research projects are discussed with examples from well-known wrecks such as Uluburun and the 15th-century Chinese junk found off the island of Palawan in the Philippines.
